1 2007. Diego ended the lawsuit and included judgments totaling more than $51 million against Fax.com, seven affiliated companies and seven individuals involved with the companies. Indiana's part of the settlement totaled $6.6 million. State officials traveled to California to work on the Fax.com lawsuit, but a new state law will soon change the way the state handles such cases. The General Assembly passed a law this year that will prohibit unwanted faxes and allow the state attorney general to go after violators in state courts.

The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2007. Carter said the law will make it easier for his office to stop unwanted faxes without clogging busy federal courts with the issue. Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Richard Buchanan also said the leased truck's registered weight was 33,000 pounds well above the limit allowed in Texas or Indiana for a driver without a commercial license.

Troopers had warned driver Kelly Hodge about the violation but did not cite her following the Aug. 8 crash, Buchanan said. Hodge was cited for failing to stay in one lane and failing to maintain a log book that records hours spent behind the wheel, as required of all long-haul truck drivers. Judith Gagen, a zoo spokeswoman, confirmed that Hodge did not have a commercial license. Gagen said the zoo was reviewing its policies in the crash's aftermath, including questions about whether Hodge should have been commercially licensed.

Hodge and fellow zoo employee Tammy Root were sharing driving duties on the trip. Root also did not have a commercial license, though Gagen said the women had experience driving big rigs. Both suffered minor injuries in the crash. Earlier this week, the animal rights group PETA called for an investigation of the accident and the creation of procedures to ensure animal safety during transport. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) A defunct company that sent out millions of unwanted faxes to Indiana homes and businesses and even emergency telephone lines and hospital rooms has been ordered to pay the state $6.6 million, the Indiana Attorney General said Thursday.

The company, former California-based Fax.com, has been shut down, so it is unlikely the state will receive the money, said Attorney General Steve Carter. But Carter said the compa-" ny will no longer be able to harass Indiana residents and businesses with annoying "junk faxes." Unwanted faxes can include stock tips or too-good-to-be-true vacation deals, and when the calls ring to telephone lines without fax machines they make a high-pitched computer noise. "People plagued by these faxes and the ringing of their phones late in the night patients' rooms in a hospital. The Attorney General's office also said the company coerced Indiana residents into housing automatic dialers in their homes in exchange for small payments. Carter said he would not be going after Indiana residents involved with the company.

"We felt they are victims also," Carter said. Recent settlements filed with a federal court in San 47tiiAmal i r. Indiana joined California's federal lawsuit against the company in 2004. The states said Fax.com violated a federal law that prohibits sending unsolicited advertising over fax machines. Indiana also argued that the company used automated dialing machines to contact prohibited phone numbers, such as emergency lines and semiautomatic rifle.

Anger in the neighborhood ran high after the shooting, apparently leading up to the fire early Thursday at the nearby home of 47-year-old Arlene Ambrose, the woman arrested as the suspected driver. Investigators found evidence that gasoline had been splashed on all four walls of a bedroom in the house and then set ablaze. "It's definitely related to Record Book Seymour, 2:05 p.m. Thursday.
