The Jersey Journal from Jersey City, New Jersey (2024)

THE JERSEY JOURNAL, TUESDAY, JANUARY 31, 1989 Obituaries Virginia Sieracki-Sauter, 69, WW A Army sergeant By Wendell Jamieson married." Virginia (Hamer) SierackiSauter, 69, a nurse who attained the rank of master sergeant during the Second World War, died Friday at Pollak Hospital in Jersey City. A native of South Carolina, Sieracki-Sauter will be buried with full military honors at the New Jersey Veterans Cemetery in Arneytown, said her daughter, Margaret 0'Brian, of Hoboken. It was during her time in the Army that Cpl. Virginia Hamer met her first husband, Rudolf Sauter, whom she outranked when they first met, 0'Brian said yesterday. "She outranked my father, and wasn't allowed to speak to him," O'Brian said.

"But my father ended up catching up to her in rank, and they got Pegeen Fitzgerald, part of first wifehusband radio team NEW YORK (AP). Pegeen Fitzgerald, part of the first husband-wife radio team whose broadcasts for half a century turned her life into a public soap opera and entertained generations, died yesterday. She was in her 80s. Her last. broadcast was heard on WNYC last spring.

Fitzgerald shared everything about her life with her listeners after taking to the airwaves in Portland, Ore. in 1937, when employees of a department store where she worked had to fill the air time of a radio station owned by the store. In 1937, a WOR-AM executive offered to put a microphone in her office at the store and she soon was doing a halfhour show during her lunch hour. When she caught pneumonia, management asked if she could go on air from her hospital bed and later from her home while she was convaleseing. Because she did not want her announcer, Henry Morgan, to see her in a bathrobe, she asked if her husband, Edward, could take his place.

The husband-wife combination became a radio first and Eleanor Roosevelt once went to their apartment to watch. Listeners at various times could hear the sound of her cleaning lady vacuuming or an electrician working in the background. The couple argued on the air about such things as bills and child-rearing, with Edward Fitzgerald becoming so angry during one breakfast show that he went back to bed, leaving his wife to finish. He died in 1982. Marlene Mangieri Marlene (Lipowski) Mangieri, 48, a resident of Woodbridge who was born in Jersey City, died Sunday at the Raritan Bay Medical Center.
